How to Build Strength, Muscle & Bodyweight
To
by Bob Hoffman
NO BUILD STRENGTH, muscle and bodyweight, you must supply the body with the materials from which it is made. The body is a complicated organism made up of an estimated 3 trillion cells, 4 billion muscular fibres. Each of these cells is a living organism which must receive oxygen and food. The cells make up the muscle fibres, and the muscle fibres in turn make up the body. The only difference between the magnificent body of John Grimek and a human skeleton is the size of the cells and the muscle fibres they comprise. It is estimated that every human being, large or small, thin or fat, weak or strong, has approximately the same number of cells and muscle fibres. The difference is in the size, the strength, the health and the ability to function efficiently of these infinitesimal cells.
The cells must be fed, and their waste must be removed. If not fed they will not grow, and if the waste is not removed, the body which they comprise will not be healthy. The cells receive their nutriment from the bloodstream, and the waste is in turn removed by the blood. First the blood must be supplied with the materials the cells need. The red corpuscles of the blood are made of protein and must include a fair share of iron, otherwise they cannot conduct the oxygen to the cells, which makes possible the operation of each cell, just as if they, everyone of the three trillions of them, were tiny motors. Then the by-products of the combustion, the strength and energy generated in the cells must be removed or the body does not operate properly. First it becomes tired easily and quickly, the first sign of a lack of protein and the iron in the blood which makes possible the transportation of the oxygen.
As we have so often said, 95% of your body, you, less the fat and water, is protein. To keep the body healthy, to build it in strength and weight, each of the tiny cells (Continued on page 44)
Tommy Kono, World and Olympic WL Champion and Record Holder, first began lifting as a competitor in the 148 pound class. He now weighs 180 pounds, and is an outstanding example of the value of proper nutrition combined with weight training. His diet has been supervised in recent years by Dr. Richard You, including Hoffman's Hi-Proteen. Photo by Irvin Barnett
STRENGTH
AND
HEALTH
You, too, can gain muscular bodyweight
Do you want to have a well-nourished body with rounded, solid shapely muscles? Now you can gain needed weight quickly and easily.
EVERY
VERY YOUNG AMERICAN wants to look like an athlete. This is a perfectly normal desire. You should be strong and you should have the visible muscles to make you look strong. Barbell training will give you these muscles, just as they have given John Grimek his matchless masculine physique... but you must properly feed your growing body with readily assimilable protein in order to gain the body weight you need.
Ever since we first put our famous Hi-Proteen food products on the market years ago, we have been constantly searching for the exactly right combination of elements to form a food that would enable the average undernourished person to gain needed weight quickly. After countless experiments we have found this magic food, which we now offer to our readers with the firm assurance that it will add pounds of solid muscular weight in the shortest possible time.
This new Weight-Gaining Hi-Proteen not only contains the elements needed to cause you to add solid poundage, but also imparts new energy, so that you may benefit more from your barbell training. The addition of the proper amounts of carbohydrates and fat has resulted in the following analysis: Protein Fat
Carbohydrates
71.64
7.42 15.40
In order to gain weight you need a certain proportion of fat, added to the protein. Some animal fats are dangerous, but the fat contained in our new formula is Soy Germ Oil, which has none of the cholesterol-forming characteristics of ordinary fats.
John C. Grimek is an outstanding example of the ideal combination of barbell training and nourishing diet. He has always used sensible York methods of training and been extremely careful to eat the proper nourishing foods. He uses many food supplements.
